A similar discussion of ARTstor fees has been taking place on the
VRA-Listserv. Certainly we at Purchase College and many other of the SUNY
colleges and even larger universities can't afford it. (Many of us smaller
schools can't even afford to subscribe to Art Index Retrospecitve and other
basic art databases.) There is discussion at SUNY about the possibility of
the SUNY library system - SUNYConnect - (versus independent colleges and
universities) subscribing for all the campuses, as it is doing for JSTOR.
Someone on the VRA Listserv posted that ARTstor is not permitting
subscriptions from consortia, but I think that SUNY's library system is not
considered a consortia. In any case, I'm looking forward to learn more
about ARTstor at the ARLIS conference.
