Assistant Director, Knight Visual Resources Facility (01936)
Located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State, Cornell University is

Job Description: Assist in the daily administration of the College of
Architecture, Art and Planning's growing collection of over 10,000 digital
image files and 450,000 slides of the built environment, fine arts and
functional arts. Initiate collection development. Research and catalog new
material. Provide reference assistance and user orientation.
In collaboration with the Director, work with the faculty and facility staff
to implement and integrate digital technologies into the teaching and
research programs of the College and the University. Assist in the
development, implementation, and maintenance of integrated text and image
databases for the collections. Provide leadership in the strategic planning,
installation, documentation, training and operational support for the
computer hardware, software, and networks dedicated to facility functions.
Analyze issues and participate in policy, budget formulation, and
operational decisions regarding the facility's use of information systems
and technologies. Offer technical expertise, support, and training for the
planning and implementation of facility automation. Research and develop
standard, effective systems for the digital archiving and electronic
dissemination of images. Maintain and update the Knight Visual Resources
Facility's web sites and web training modules.
The Systems Administrator serves as the Assistant Director of the facility
and assumes administrative responsibilities for the facility when the
director of the facility is absent.
Qualifications: BA in an appropriate subject area (art history, arch,
history or computer science)with 2-3 years visual resources or library
experience or equivalent combination. MA or an ALA accredited MLS in library
and information science with an undergraduate major in an appropriate
subject area preferred.
2-3 years supervisory experience in an academic research library or visual
resources collection desirable.
Working knowledge of library systems as well as digital imaging
technologies, HTML, and current trends necessary. Proven experience in
creating and managing websites, designing and extending website
architecture, and using website authoring and management tools. Ability to
develop and maintain knowledge regarding current trends and digital
technologies. Able to work independently under pressure and solve problems
creatively.
Experience with troubleshooting both analog and digital audio-visual and
photographic equipment, and a working knowledge of basic photographic
techniques and procedures highly desirable.
Demonstrated Computer Application Proficiencies in Programs such as:
Windows operating systems, Web authoring applications such as Dreamweaver
and Flash; Image manipulation software such as Adobe Photoshop and
Debabelizer; Word processing and spreadsheet applications; CD-R, CD-RW and
DVD-R authoring tools; database applications such as FileMaker Pro, Access;
data editors such as Luna's Inscribe; Image browser software such as Luna's
Insight and Extensis Portfolio; digital video editing software, and image
scanning software applications.
