CURATOR OF DECORATIVE ARTS
THE NICKLE ARTS MUSEUM
The Nickle Arts Museum at the University of Calgary has important
collections of art, numismatics and carpets, including over 600 Oriental
carpets and textiles. The museum is seeking a Curator whose major
responsibility will be the development and care of the Oriental carpet
collection.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of this position reflect both museum and
academic expectations:
· programming including mounting exhibitions of carpets and other
artifacts, promoting the use of The Nickle and its textile collection
within and beyond the university, and contributing to the teaching
programme of appropriate departments;
· research including completing the inventory of the carpet
collection, and publishing descriptive catalogues and scholarly articles
and;
· community relations such as public lectures and liaison with local
collectors and dealers.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must hold a graduate degree in a
relevant discipline such as Art, Islamic Studies, Archaeology or
History. Experience in a museum is essential together with an interest
in and familiarity with the orient. The applicant must have strong
interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to work both
independently and in a team environment, and be flexible and adaptable.
A commitment to professional development, scholarship and service is
expected.
Desired Qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants who hold
a Ph.D. degree and are eligible to teach at the graduate level, and to
those who can provide evidence of previous curatorial responsibilities,
and scholarly potential.
Salary and Rank: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
including a generous benefit package. This is an academic tenure track
position.
