Hello all,
I too have a fine arts background and am in library school, although I have
been a member of ARLIS/NA for over a year now. I have similar concerns to
those of Sugene, although as I am a Canadian I think my options are even more
limited. I have noticed that Canadians are underepresented in general,
although we are not lacking in artistic culture. That might be a question for
discussion. Also I wonder: are there specific chapters in the various
provinces?
As far as recruiting new and young members is concerned I will say that I
personally have done all I can to promote ARLIS and to make my colleagues who
have different interests aware of what ARLIS is up to by posting ARLIS-L
messages on our school listserv and generally reminding them that art
libraries and librarians are important members of the profession.
I will say though that interest has been small, primarily because ALA, CLA,
SLA and the various local societies are enough for anyone not specifically
interested in the arts to handle, monetarily and otherwise. However I have
noticed that even some students that have a background in art, would rather
spend their money on the above societies, partly because those are the ones
that have student chapters at the school. In fact I have had to forgo being a
member of the above, in order to join ARLIS. In any case, my suggestion would
be: promotion, promotion, promotion.
Cheers,
FF
