Hi Sugene,
Your observations are well taken. How do you participate when the cost of
the conference is prohibitive? It is a hard question. I see that you have
joined ARLIS/NC and I would encourage you to broaden that to include the
local chapter affiliated with ARLIS/NA which is ARLIS/SE
(http://www.arlis-se.org/). I believe strongly in the local chapters,
having seen my own chapter of ARLIS DC/MD/VA encourage diversity and the
recruitment of young librarians.
You make a strong case for offering a Diversity Travel Award from each of
our local chapters at each conference. It is the only way I see of making
recruitment equitable to both library school students and new
librarians. As one of the outgoing co-chairs for the ARLIS/NA Diversity
Committee, I know your concerns will be on the agenda for the Diversity
Forum. I am hoping we will see frank discussion of how to implement
recruiting initiatives. I am only sorry that you cannot be there. We will
make every effort to continue discussions also on
ARLIS-L.
yours,
