TITLE:          Head, Architecture-Urban Planning Library

LOCATION:       Architecture-Urban Planning Library

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The University of Washington Libraries seeks a creative leader to direct and
oversee a dynamic, user-centered Architecture-Urban Planning Library. The
library serves the UW College of Architecture and Urban Planning and
provides support for programs in Architecture, Landscape Architecture,
Construction Management, and Urban Design & Planning, and many centers
associated with the College.

Under the general direction of the Head of the Arts, Architecture, and
Business Libraries, the Head of the Architecture-Urban Planning Library is
responsible for providing overall management and policy guidance; developing
and implementing innovative service programs; hiring, developing, and
evaluating personnel; overseeing development and maintenance of
Architecture-Urban Planning Library collections; and contributing to the
achievement of Libraries objectives and the fulfillment of the Libraries
strategic plan. The Head of the Architecture-Urban Planning Library is
responsible for ensuring excellence in access, reserve, collection
development, multi-media, reference, research, and instructional services.
Is responsible for building effective relationships with faculty and
students, and collaborations with campus and community groups and
institutions.  The Head also implements appropriate digital projects and may
participate in the Libraries' Digital Initiatives program.

SPECIFIC DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides leadership and direction for the Architecture-Urban Planning
Library.  Develops long-range and short-range plans to implement programs
and services.

Responsible for management and supervision of the Architecture-Urban
Planning Library.

Supervises, trains, and evaluates classified staff in the Architecture-Urban
Planning Library. Recommends hiring, promotion and termination of
Architecture-Urban Planning Library classified staff, and student employees.

Has overall responsibility for administration of Architecture-Urban Planning
Library service programs including collection development, reference,
instruction, circulation, and reserves.

Provides reference and instructional services for the College of
Architecture and Urban Planning.  Produces user education materials.
Participates in other user education activities as part of the Libraries'
instructional programs.

Develops Architecture-Urban Planning Library collections to support the
research, instruction, and curricular programs of the University of
Washington.

Maintains an awareness of current developments and trends in information and
digital technologies and their impacts on Architecture, Construction
Management, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Design and Planning education
and library services.

Implements appropriate digital services and may participate in the
Libraries' Digital Initiatives Program.

Maintains positive, effective, and collaborative working relationships with
faculty and staff in the College of Architecture and Urban Planning.

As a library unit head, maintains a broad understanding of the Libraries'
operations, policies, priorities, and objectives.  Assists in the
development and achievement of these by participating in library committees,
teams, and meetings as appropriate.  Facilitates communication between
Architecture-Urban Planning Library staff and other Libraries
units.

Represents Architecture-Urban Planning Library users and services within the
Libraries. Actively contributes to discussions and planning for Libraries
policies, programs, and services.

Assumes other responsibilities as assigned; performs other duties as
requested.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

1. Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library
Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies
degree.

2. Minimum of three years post-MLS relevant professional experience.

3. Academic background in a relevant discipline, or substantial experience
in an Architecture library.

4. Leadership accomplishments in redefining programs and/or improving
services and strategic directions.

5. Extensive knowledge of relevant information sources, and strategies for
providing effective access and support to these resources.

6. Significant collection development experience in disciplines served by
the Architecture-Urban Planning Library.

7. Demonstrated user-centered philosophy and public service orientation.

8. Familiarity with current developments and trends in information and
digital technologies and their impacts on research, education, and library
services for disciplines served by the Library.

9. Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, and
organizational skills.

10. Commitment to ongoing staff development and training.

11. Ability to represent the Libraries on campus and regionally and
nationally.

Desired:

1. Academic research library experience.

2. Supervisory experience.

3. Advanced degree in a relevant field.

SALARY: $45,000 minimum.  Starting salary commensurate with qualifications
and background.

BENEFITS: Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the
University of Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group,
SAFECO Mutual Funds and/or Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis.
Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at
the rate of 12 working days per year.  Excellent medical, dental and life
insurance plans.  No state or local income tax.
