In response to my posting 12/18, a few people asked me to share the
replies, which I'm delighted to do in gratitude for everyone's help. Here's
the original question: "Advice needed from any of you out there who might
have dealt with this problem: I'm withdrawing many serial runs and partial
runs. (I'm currently tripping over "American Heritage", "Horizon" and some
museums' bulletins.) A solo librarian working 3 days a week, I don't have
the time to offer them to all of you because it takes too much time to sort
out the ones you'd like, wrap for mailing, and take them to the post office.
So, I offer them to our Univ. of Cal. Santa Barbara, our public library, and
the local city college. If they don't want them, I ask a couple of local
dealers. If THEY don't want them, what shall I do??? Even the thrift store
doesn't want them. I hate just throwing them out. What a waste.
Is there anyone out there who has confronted this problem? Any ideas?"
SUMMARY:
There were 25 replies -- 3 actually interested in acquiring the two
mentioned.
Suggestions:
o Give to local high schools, jr. highs, local art schools,
college art departments to cut up for collages etc.
o Give to retirement home, homeless shelter, hospital, service
organization.
o Offer to dealers (gave specific contact info for 2 dealers).
o Offer to museum staff for free.
o Just throw them out.(I love that one, but my conscience
won't allow it.)
o Give away to library visitors.
o Offer for sale sell very cheaply. Bundle several (10 or 12)
and offer the bundle for 50 cents or a dollar. (Works better than selling
issues individually, even if they are only 5 cents an issue!) I currently
have an ongoing Book Sale Shelf.
o Offer to the public library or other non-profit groups for
their book sales.
o Have my own annual book sale. Caveat: very time consuming.
o Give them to the Museum education dept. for their art
classes. (For fiscal reasons our classes are on hiatus.)
o Give to prison libraries (5 people suggested). Caveat:
remove any mailing labels. One person gave me name of the Lionheart
Organization which helps in this regard.
http://www.lionheart.org/prison_proj/about_nelpp.html .
o Offer to The Arts Appreciation Group in Hollywood, FL. Which
will pay for shipping if they want them. (Contact's name & email given, but
I hesitate to post here as it appears to be the individual's personal
permanent email address.)
