rewarding overseas career opportunity and a chance to participate in the
development of a new library service and a ground-breaking educational
endeavor.
VCU-Q is the first college to participate in a new and pioneering Education
City, under the sponsorship of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science
and Community Development, bringing the best of American higher education to
the Arabian Gulf. The School is a branch campus of Virginia Commonwealth
University in Richmond, Virginia. It offers a complete educational program
leading to a VCU BFA degree in Communication Arts and Design, Fashion Design
and Merchandising, and Interior Design, with the mission of creating
opportunities that encourage intellectual and professional growth for the
young women of Qatar and the region. The first graduating class received
their degrees in June 2001. The library is still in development, with some
12,000 volumes, 850 videos and DVDs, and 20,000 slides. A new, larger
library facility is being planned.
