RUBBINGS CATALOGER
Reporting to the Asian Art Bibliographer, the cataloger creates cataloging
records for Rubel's collection of approximately 2,000 Chinese rubbings,
using Harvard's on-line visual materials cataloging system OLIVIA.
Cataloging data to be developed includes descriptive and provenance
information and some subject analysis. Cataloging also involves research
using external databases and print sources, to augment available
information about the works. In coordination and consultation with the
Asian Art Bibliographer and the Head of Collection Management, establishes
priorities for cataloging and workflow. As the project progresses, will
participate in workflow for digitizing rubbings. NOTE THIS IS A ONE YEAR
TERM POSITION.
Required Education, Experience, Skills
B.A. required and graduate level studies in Asian art, Asian
Studies,archeology or closely related academic field preferred.Fluency in
modern Chinese; scholarly background in Chinese historical texts, knowledge
of Chinese history, especially the Han through Tang periods. Familiarity
with Pinyin and Wide-Giles romanization as well as the creation of Chinese
characters using character input software. Cataloging experience desirable,
preferably of visual materials. Experience with electronic databases;
knowledge of and familiarity with Harvard's on-line visual
materials systems, OLIVIA and VIA, as well as other Harvard databases such
as HOLLIS preferred.
Compensation:
Harvard University offers a competitive program of benefits. This is a
salary grade 56. Appointment salary is dependent on qualifications and
experience.
