Just fine Gladys, thanks for asking. I live about a mile straight in
from the coast, and the closest the fires came to us was about 7
miles away. I'm copying everyone because UCSD is just north of where
I live so is included in the report.
Unlike the Karnos who live directly in the line of the northern fire
(Bev said it came up to their driveway), the biggest problem for us
was the wind blowing in the smoke and ashes. The air went to the most
hazardous levels they measure, and people were advised not to go out
unless necessary and to close all windows. The skies at 1 p.m. were
as dark as twilight - very eerie. Wed. afternoon the winds shifted
and started blowing in from the west - our air cleared immediately -
what a relief to be able to go outside & breath.
Because of the air quality, UCSD was closed Mon-Wed., and SDSU might
still be closed because they are further east. CS San Marcos is
definitely closed.
A big portion of SD County is still without power because a major
transformer line, not to mention countless regular electric poles,
was burned - most of our electricity is not underground. There is a
lot of work ahead for the electric company before all of the county
gets phone & electricity returned.
From what I can tell from the local reports, none of the major
schools or libraries were burnt, and most of the casinos were saved
too!
