Greetings--
According to the Yahoo archive of ARLIS messages,
there was a query in 1999 requesting the current
location of a painting by Hermann Knackfuss
called "The Yellow Peril" or "Die Gelbe Gefahr"
or possibly "Volker Europas wahret Eure heligsten
Guter." (This painting is apparently mentioned
in Barbara Tuchman's "The Zimmermann Telegram.")
The librarian was from Ontario, I believe, and
posted the query for a friend...the addresses
are cropped in the Yahoo text so I can't follow up
directly.
DID ANYONE EVER FIND ANY INFORMATION? (frustrated
cry!)
I have a similar query and have just spent a
looong time looking without success. Apparently
the work was commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm in
1895 or thereabouts. I found a reference on a
website that the work was given to Czar Nicholas.
(The work is listed in neither Gemalde in deutschen
Museen nor the catalog of 19-20th century German/
Austrian paintings in the Hermitage, by the way.)
There is a "federlithographie" illustration
available online, which presumably is a reproductive
copy.
Has anyone already looked into this question
in the past with any success?
Best,
