You might try the publication cited below. It gives current average prices
for books in a variety of categories, including art. If you had to replace
all your books, you could say you'd have to pay $X times the number of
books you lost. This is a very crude way to value a collection since some
books are not available at any price, many would cost way more than $X
because of rarity in the second-hand market, and the insurance-industry
"fact" that your books now are "used" and therefore less valuable than
when you bought them. But implanting the idea of having to replace all, or
most, books at today's prices in order to have a functioning library could
be persuasive to your admin, especially if they are planning to
