Dear Colleagues,
Bravo to Miguel for keeping us informed, and I hope he will continue
to do so. I have enjoyed the informative discussions going on on
ARLIS-L lately. Perhaps the spirit of Baltimore has lingered.
In that vein, I am happy to announce that I received an appointment
from the ARLIS Board to serve as special liaison to the American
Library Association (ALA) Office for Diversity. This is the umbrella
office created in recent years to coordinate ALA efforts in
Diversity. As such, it maintains a direct line to other groups such
as BCALA, REFORMA, AILA, CALA to name a few and now coordinates the
Spectrum Initiative. You can find their web site at
http://www.ala.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Our_Association/Offices/Diversity3/Diversity.htm
. Miguel will also be a liaison to REFORMA, so we will, hopefully,
keep you all informed.
I recently contacted Wendy Prellwitz, the new Program Director, and
she mentioned a number of initiatives the Office has begun. I have
specifically asked her to give us some suggestions on recruitment
issues. Meetings in Toronto should also provide a chance to become
more involved with ALA. In fact, the Office of Diversity welcomed a
contact from ARLIS and hoped we could build stronger ties. As
information becomes available, Miguel and I will be forwarding
postings to the list. It looks like a promising year.
yours,
lucie
