I would like to put my oar in.
Just to say that a discussion of the loss of heritage for both Iraq and the
whole of humanity IS of professional interest. The politics associated with
this (American imperialism courtesy of the present regime in the U.S.)
cannot and should not be ignored.
Having said that I don't think a spiral into politics should be embarked
upon...um, I can't help myself...please, for the sake of humanity, 'vote'
that madman out of office (democracy at work - the great American export).
America has too many weapons of mass destruction and has proven a will to
use them.
I'll not write again. Apologies for the outburst but not for the sentiments.

Subject: Re: [ARLIS-L] Iraqi Antiquities and Historical Documents
As you can imagine I have caused a bit of a stir in some circles. Rather
than respond to individuals, let me amplify and thereby dig myself in even
deeper. Here is my reply:
I regret you took this as a political statement. It was intended as a
cultural statement.
The Disneyization and McDonaldization of culture and society are among the
subjects of contemporary social thought and scholarship.
The search "historic parks and disney" in the index " America:History and
Life" retrieves some articles on the debate taking place between scholars
of history and scholars of popular culture.
My original remarks were half tongue-in-cheek. I believe George Bush
etal would sincerely believe they had done right by the Iraqi people if
amends for the looting and destruction of their cultural heritage were
made in the form of building a cradle of civilization theme park. In
Ciceronian fashion, I will refrain from remarking on the profits to be
gained....
