The Library of Congress N classification includes a section for "calligraphy as painting" in ND1454-1457 and included sections there for Arabic, Buddhist, Chinese, Islamic, Japanese, Korean and Zen. Calligraphy more generally is classified in NK3600+. LC is now proposing to make the ND numbers obsolete and to expand the NK numbers. Here's their message:
The Library of Congress is requesting comments on a proposed change in classification practice for works on Asian calligraphy. The complete proposal is posted on the Web page of the Cataloging Policy and Support Office at http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/callig.html Comments are requested by May 31,
2003.
