Degree and area of specialization:
ALA Accredited MLS or an advanced degree and relevant library
experience.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible rare book and manuscript
experience in a research or academic library; excellent oral, written,
planning, and interpersonal skills required.The successful candidate
will also demonstrate the best combination of the following desired
competencies:a) Ability to view issues from a library system perspective
and to contribute effectively on collaborative projects within and
outside the library.b) Capacity for organization and leadership in a
library setting and the ability to successfully manage a department.c)
Collection development and administrative experience; experience
developing special collections through purchase and gift programs.d)
Experience with the development and implementation of digital
initiatives, familiarity with digital technology and preservation issues
in rare book collections; strong familiarity with electronic access and
resources with the role of electronic information in teaching and
research programs.e) Experience with donor relationships; demonstrated
ability to seek outside funding; ability to work in a collegial fashion
with faculty, researchers, and alumni; grant writing ability desirable;
ability to play leading role in the Friends group.f) Experience
conducting instructional programs in the use and interpretation of rare
books; experience with outreach programs such as lectures, exhibits, and
publication.g) Reading knowledge of at least two Western European
languages.
Principal duties:
The Library System seeks an experienced and skilled librarian to
provide leadership in the operational management of the Special
Collections Department. The Curator will actively contribute, in a team
environment, to public service activities, directing the publication,
exhibitions, and public programming sponsored by the Department. S/he is
expected to work closely with library administrators, subject
bibliographers, member libraries, and the conservation, preservation,
and digital project units as well as University Archives and the
Wisconsin Historical Society Library. The Curator works closely with the
Friends of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries, Library
Communications, and the UW Foundation in seeking outside funding and
gifts to the libraries. The Curator, reporting to the Associate Director
for Public Services and Member Libraries, is a member of the Memorial
Library Management Group.Other responsibilities include:a) Supervising
department staff, currently comprised of 4 FTE and 1 FTE equivalent of
student assistance.b) Collection development in history of books and
printing and rare book reference materials.c) Reference and public
service which includes acting as liaison between the department and
teaching units within the University.d) Planning departmental
exhibits.e) Coordinating with other Library System departments and
libraries the shift of valuable materials to the Special Collections
vaults.f) Representing the department on library, university, and
community committees involving rare books and special collections.
