Lu,
I was intrigued by your request because I distinctly recollected seing that
element "in real life"...
Unfortunatly I was not able to find any reproduction of the medieval and
Renaissance suns with wavy rays that I remembered, with the
possible exception of a painting by Arcangelo di Cola da Camerino in the
John Johnson Collection, Philadelphia. And the photo I tracked down was so
small that I could not be sure that the rays were wavy...
However, if you have access to it, there is a marvelous old source of
pictures in Walter Herdeg's "The Sun in Art: Sun Symbolism of Past and
Present, in Pagan and Christian Art, Popular Art, Fine Art and Applied
Art", The Graphis Press, Zurich, Switzerland, 1962.
Too bad the sun cannot have straight rays, because it would have been much
easier to find. Think about the collection of sculpted sun faces
on Bernini's Baldacchino in St Peter's, Rome, just under the entablature...
The wavy element is wonderfully exploited in relief in the ceiling of the
Chiesa del Gesu' in Cortona, but it encircles the Name of Jesus and not the
sun!
Best of luck ! I hope to see what our colleagues come up with...
