Dear Colleagues--
The Digital Library for the Decorative Arts
(made possible by the Chipstone Foundation and
produced at the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison) has
new things to show you. I'm pleased to announce
these new additions and to tell you more will be
forthcoming very shortly.
http://digital.library.wisc.edu/1711.dl/DLDecArts
is our handle (permanent URL) if you would like
to link to us.
ARLIS members may remember this as a website
pioneered by Cate Cooney before her departure
from Wisconsin a year or so ago. Since then,
those of us involved with the UW Digital Content
Group have been expanding the site's offerings
to include more full-text books related to the
decorative arts and material culture.
At this point, we have put up 12 titles (some
in multi volumes) for open use by scholars of
the decorative arts. Titles include:
Thomas Chippendale's "The Gentleman and Cabinet-
maker's Director" (first edition, 1754);
Edith Wharton's "The Decoration of Houses" (1897);
J. G. Chapman's "The American Drawing-Book" (1870);
The complete 7 volumes of Caylus' "Recueil
d'antiquities Egyptiennes, Etrusques, Grecques
et Romaines" (1752-1767); and more.
See the full list on our e-facsimile "about" page:
http://libtext.library.wisc.edu/DLDecArts/About.html
Soon to come is a searchable database containing
full views and details of approximately 100 pieces
of Early American furniture from the Chipstone
collection. Also in process are other full-text
furniture and architecture pattern books.
I would be pleased to get feedback on our site and
our title selections from the "collective wisdom"
you all represent. And I'd be grateful if you
called my attention to anything that isn't working!
