Hello all!
The Atlanta College of Art Library has been hit hard too - to the tune of
over $12,000 in prepaid subscriptions that have never materialized. It's
important to recognize that even though EBSCO is in discussion with FAXON,
the likelihood of any buyout going through quickly is remote. I have been
told by an EBSCO rep and by FAXON that we might be lucky to get 10-20% of
what we paid them back. I am resolved that we have lost our funds, so any
monies we get back will be a bonus.
Most of my journals (about 200 of them - 160 or so that came due on December
31, 2002) do not have electronic versions -- too small for that -- so I
decided immediately after hearing about this fiasco to switch all my
publications to EBSCO. I have been told that we will have few if any gaps
in our collection from that and we will try to purchase missing issues from
the publishers.
I also encourage all libraries affected by this to notify your state
attorney general to see if there is anything that can be done similar to the
action taken by New York State -- who is launching a class action suit, I've
read, on behalf of SUNY/Buffalo and others. I am also contacting Jones Day,
a NYC law firm with a branch in Georgia, who is involved in a suit to let
them know that others are also suffering. I suspect many publishers of
specialty art, design and architecture journals don't even know that FAXON
is folding.
Let's not take this lying down...yell loud and a lot - to your
local/state/regional consortia, to the press, to anyone that can hear you.
I'm very angry about all this and hope divine is thoroughly investigated and
prosecuted if appropriate (as it now seems it is).
Moira

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Ideas/solutions re Faxon problem?
We have been hit pretty hard by the Faxon debacle. We are in the
process of checking to see which of our titles are fulltext online.
We started that process before this mess hit, hoping to offer the
list as an alternative for our online-oriented patrons. We will now
be posting the list as a substitute for the hard copies we will not
be receiving. we are trying to include such things as format (HTML
or PDF); dates of online availability; color, b & w or no
illustrations included; etc.
Has anyone else come up with something different (and better, I hope)
to cope with patron unhappiness at the loss of current journals?
