THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY

THE BEINECKE RARE BOOK AND MANUSCRIPT LIBRARY
The Beinecke Library, with one of the world's largest buildings devoted
entirely to rare books and manuscripts, is Yale's principal repository for
literary archives, early manuscripts, and rare books. The Beinecke
collections are internationally known and heavily used by scholars from
around the world. In addition to its distinguished general collections, the
Beinecke Library houses outstanding special collections devoted to American
literature, German literature, Western Americana, and the Osborn
Collection, noted for its British literary and historical manuscripts. For

RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the general direction of the Head of the Manuscript Unit, and working
in close collaboration with the Public Services Librarian and the Digital
Studio Supervisor, the Catalog Librarian for Digital Projects creates
descriptive metadata from the item in hand, or derives metadata from
authorized bibliographic tools and sources, across a wide range of
materials (manuscripts, photographs, ephemera, maps, prints and drawings,
rare books, and other printed materials) to support the Beinecke Library's
ambitious digital library agenda. Descriptive cataloging is performed in
accordance with local and national standards. Subject analysis follows
Library of Congress standards and local practice.
The Catalog Librarian for Digital Projects keeps abreast of revisions in
cataloging and digital library metadata rules and trends, and applies new
rules, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate, in consultation with
other Beinecke digital project staff. Maintains local metadata standards
documentation for BRBL digital projects, both for internal reference and
for wider public distribution. Represents Beinecke in discussions
pertaining to metadata and cataloging standards for digital library
development at Yale, and is active professionally. May train and revise the
work of students and cataloging assistants.
QUALIFICATIONS
MLS from an ALA-accredited library science program. 1-2 years cataloging
experience in a research or academic library setting, preferably with
special collections materials. Demonstrated familiarity with the basic
principles and standards for descriptive cataloging of rare printed
materials, archival and manuscript material, or visual materials. Working
knowledge of AACR2, Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, and Library
of Congress Subject Headings. Strong bibliographic knowledge of at least 1
modern Western European language: French, German, Italian, Spanish, or
Latin highly desirable. Strong computer skills, including experience with
bibliographic services such as Voyager, RLIN, or OCLC, and networked-based
tools.
Ability to excel in a rapidly changing environment. Demonstrated ability to
organize and coordinate work, handle multiple projects simultaneously, meet
deadlines, and be an effective contributor to a production-oriented,
project environment. Strong service orientation.
Preferred: Experience cataloging rare books, manuscripts, archival
collections, or visual materials. Previous experience working on digital
projects, especially in an academic or research library setting.
Familiarity with EAD (Encoded Archival Description), Dublin Core, VRA, TEI,
XML or other text and document encoding standards. Supervisory experience.
Appointment to the Librarian II rank requires two years of professional
experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the
rank. Offer contingent on successful completion of a complete background check.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Rank and competitive salary will be based upon the successful candidate's
