Dear ARLIS-L,
Here is an issue that was recently brought to my attention. Will your
libraries
be purchasing this book? What do you think?
--Heather Cleary
The following catalogue is published on the occasion of an exhibition held
in Utrecht June 15 - September 1, 2002.
JIRI GEORG DOKOUPIL: ELKE WOLK IS EEN WEG/EVERY CLOUD IS A WAY.
Centraal Museum Utrecht, 2002. ISBN 90-73-285-895
208 pp. (2 foldout) with 84 ills. (68 col.) 25 x 18 cm.
Bilingual in Dutch and English
The exhibition reviewed Dokoupil's role in the contemporary Dutch art
scene by bringing together works from various private and public
collections in the Netherlands. The catalogue features some 50 paintings
produced since the early 1980s by the Czech-born artist, including works
that incorporate such unconventional media as soot, car tire prints, fruit
juice and inky soap suds.
The catalogue's unusual binding features a green liquid sealed within a
clear mylar cover, evocative of the soapy fluid the artist uses to create
his soap suds paintings. Although the catalogue would otherwise seem
appropriate for libraries collecting in the area of contemporary art, the
fact that the binding is not only unusual but also potentially harmful to
collections (were the fluid to leak), obviously makes it a somewhat
problematic acquisition for cataloguers and technical service staff alike.
Although this unusual publication has appeal as a collector's item and for
certain special collections, is it the kind of material that most art
libraries would want to have in their regular collections? The
publication's price (approximately $55 to $60) is not exorbitant, but
certainly reflects the production costs associated with the unique binding.
