Art Resource Center Assistant
Part-time/Temporary
The Tacoma Art Museum's aggressive exhibition schedule and innovative
educational programs attract thousands of visitors annually to its galleries
and events. The Museum's vision stresses the significant role taken in the
overall cultural life of the entire region, having served Puget Sound
citizens since 1935.
The Tacoma Art Museum embarked on a $27 million capital campaign in 1997, to
double the size of its current facility and relocate in the arts/education
district in Tacoma. As of June 2002, the Campaign has reached $25.5 million
and has received a prestigious Kresge Challenge Grant of $750,000.
Internationally known architect, Antoine Predock, is designing the new
facility, with an opening date of May 3, 2003.

Art Resource Center Statement of Purpose:
The Bill & Melinda Gates Art Resource Center is a place for varied audiences
to build on their experiences with Tacoma Art Museum's collections,
exhibitions and programs. A selection of books, periodicals, videos,
computer programs and teacher resources engages the community in discussions
ranging from art concepts to art history scholarship to art-making
techniques at all levels. Access to the Art Resource Center encourages an
enhanced museum experience, inspiring visitors to further explore concepts
and content addressed in the exhibitions on view. Focused programming and
various lending resources provide our community with opportunities to build
and strengthen foundations for art understanding.
POSITION OBJECTIVE:
This position part-time, temporary position, which reports to the Curator of
Education, is responsible for coordinating the transition of the current
museum library into the Bill and Melinda Gates Art Resource Center. Duties
include but are not limited to: collection management and development,
organizing teacher resources, and supervising volunteers.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
Collection Management
* Plan and oversee the relocation of the library's collection
of over 6,000 items to new building.
* Develop an action plan for the first three years of the
Resource Center.
* Organize resources for schools and other educational
organizations in the community and develop system for circulating these
materials.
Collection Development
* Working with the Education and Curatorial departments,
develop purchasing priorities, accession and de-accession policies for all
materials.
* Evaluate current exchange program and develop new policies.
Intellectual Access
* Oversee cataloging policies and procedures.
* Convert collection's Dewey classification to Library of
Congress classification.
Administration & Budgeting
* Work with Development department to secure outside funding
for Library programs, collections and special projects.
* Manage dedicated corps of volunteers.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Proven track record in library/resource center.
Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills; ability to work as part of
team.
Must work well with staff, volunteers and the general public to promote the
philosophy and goals of the Education Department and the Tacoma Art Museum
as a whole.
Requires a high degree of interpersonal skills; individual must be
personable and diplomatic in working with diverse constituency.
Flexibility and versatility required to work in an evolving work situation.
Excellent written and oral skills.
Involvement in professional organizations.
Must be able to communicate effectively and manage individuals and teams in
a dynamic work environment.
Knowledge of museum operations and the roles of various professional staff.
Minimum Qualifications:
2 years professional library experience
High level of written and oral communication skills
Goal oriented with strong organizational skills.
Bachelors Degree (Art or Art History preferred)
Masters in Library Science or equivalent experience
Special Qualifications:
Experience in administration of collections in transition preferred,
flexibility and creativity essential.
