Michael May from the Univ. of Alberta contacted me about not being able to
find some references in the online l'Annee via the modern author search key
-- but that could be found via other access points. I too had trouble. We
both had made the same mistake: we assumed we had reached the end of the
possible entries for N.G.L. Hammond on the first page of entries. We should
have gone onto the second page of choices where there were additional
possibilities, including the choice that indeed had the desired citation.
The problem was with: The continuity of Macedonian institutions and the
Macedonian kingdoms of the Hellenistic era. Historia 2000 49 (2) : 141-160
I'm enclosing the analysis of the problem that was made by a member of the
American office of the L'Annee which is now housed here in Cincinnati.
I just wanted to alert you all to this glitch which I hope will be attended
to at some point soon! It is going to be a real headache for those w/o
knowledge of the glitch.

Subject: Re: Quirks in Online APh
Jean,
I looked further into the problems you cite below and have discovered
how, in fact, to locate these authors under a modern author search.
The technique the user must follow is not ideal, however, and I am
eager to know whether this user interface might be improved in the
future. For the convenience of those associated with APh who
frequently receive this type of question from users, I'm forwarding
our correspondence to Éric Rebillard, director of the online APh
project at the Société Internationale de Bibliographie Classique; to
Dee Clayman, General Editor of the DCB; and to Lisa Carson, Director
of the American Office.
In every case, the problem is that the work in question appears in
the data base under a form of the author's last name FOLLOWED BY A
COMMA ("Hammond, Nicholas G. L."). The comma means that in the search
results these forms are listed after all other possible forms of the
author's name NOT followed by commas (for example "Hammond N. G. L."
and "Hammond Nicholas G. L."). If you search under modern author for
Hammond, therefore, a confusing situation occurs. You are first
presented with a search result that lists authors starting with
"Hammond Bammel C. P." and ending with "Hammond, Mason". It looks as
if all the Nicholas Hammond matches ought to be in this list, but in
fact what you are seeing is only the first page of the results. If
you click on the "2" above the list, you are given page 2, which has
authors ranging from "Hammond C. P." to "Hammond, Philip C." The
second to the last entry is "Hammond, Nicholas G. L." with a comma.
This possibility needs to be selected along with all the other
Nicholas Hammonds in order to find the work in question.
So the forms of a last name that are followed by commas are sorted
AFTER all other forms of that last name, which can lead to confusion
when the user doesn't notice that she/he is looking only at the first
page of the search results.
The same problem occurs with the other examples Jean cites.
