The Smithsonian American Art Museum's Inventory of American Paintings is a
listing of American paintings executed before 1914, with dimensions, media,
location. The images are not available online, but can be obtained through
the Inventories office. Go to "http://siris.si.edu"; and select "Art
Inventories"

Can anybody recommend major sources for images of American painting
(18th-20th centuries) for publication in a book on American history. Many
