Greetings from Oberlin,
I need advice from your collective expertise. We are planning an expansion
to our art complex that may include additional square feet for the art
library. I have been asked to gather the following information. I have
already contacted the Chair of the Space Planning Round Table but am hoping
other librarians who have recently planned new libraries or overseen
significant renovations will have some thoughts on the following:
1. What is the perceived impact of digital technology (e.g., e-books and
e-journals) on collection growth in an art library?
2. For what sort of materials is compact shelving considered appropriate?
Does compact shelving affect patron browsing?
3. When is off-site storage (with a 2-day turn around) considered
appropriate?
A little background: we are a branch art library at a private liberal arts
college. We support a museum and its curators and the Art Dept. (art
history and a very active studio program).
Thanks,
Barbara
