We have come upon this question that we can't seem to figure out. In the
catalogue entries in Berenson's The drawings of the Florentine painters
(amplified ed, see bib record below), he lists two sets of numbers. We are
most interested in an explanation for no. 140 in the Andrea del Sarto
section, (pg. 13) At the beginning of entry 140 there is another number that
leads off the little paragraph of text. This is: no. 264. Our reference
staff has scoured this entire text, and have not been able to figure out
what this second number refers to. This is very frustrating because there
are several other entries in the volume that are the same way, and Berenson
did not seem to provide the reader with an explanation. Is there anyone out
there who knows the solution to this mystery?
