For out of print books we charge the replacement cost to us: I have work study
students who check ABE online where most titles turn up. We can limit it to
Calif. book dealers for a fairly accurate local picture. If the item is not
there, then I make an educated guess. But we also charge billing fees ($8.50)
and a processing fee ($20.00). The $20.00 fee we waive if the student brings
in the replacement copy.
We looked at going to a standard price, but the out of print materials vary so
widely in cost that it seemed unfair and also time consuming to justify the
cost to the students . With actual cost they know we aren't "making money" on
them.
The $28.50 fees help prevent students from "buying" a book they want from the
Library by telling us it has been lost.
