The Arts of the Book Collection, Yale University Library is pleased to host:
By Chance: Serendipity and Randomness in Contemporary Artists' Books
on display now through November 6, 2002
Chance is often a factor in the creation of artwork. Making books and
other art works by hand allows serendipity and randomness to sneak into
their creation. Over the years many artists have incorporated into their
creative process chance operations, randomness or blind collaboration
(working separately on the same project, without knowing what the other is
doing). The exhibit focuses on the idea of purposefully using chance in
the concept and/or execution of contemporary artists' books. Using both
historical and modern examples, the show illustrates different approaches
by artists who have embraced unpredictability.
"By Chance" is based on the idea developed by guest curator, Robin Price,
Printer & Publisher, of Middletown, Connecticut. Price's recent work falls
into the category of embracing chance, and she was curious about others'
ventures into this arena. Her research led her to the Arts of the Book
Collection at the Yale University Library. "That's a great idea for a
show!" said Jae Rossman, Special Collections Librarian. The exhibit will be
presented in two locations in the Sterling Memorial Library: the
Exhibition Corridor in the main hall and in the Arts of the Book Collection.
Robin Price will give a lecture about her findings on chance in the work of
contemporary book artists on Thursday, October 3, 2002 at 4pm in the
Sterling Memorial Library lecture hall. This lecture and the exhibition
are free and open to the public.
The Arts of the Book Collection is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from
9 am - 1pm and Tuesday and Thursday from 1pm - 5pm. The Collection will
have special Saturday hours on September 14 and October 12, 2002 from 11am
- 3pm. The Exhibition Corridor is accessible when the Sterling Memorial
Library is open. Check the library's web site for
