The 2003 ARLIS Conference is shaping up nicely (http://arlis2003.library.jhu.edu/). Selected conference sessions have been scheduled and are being developed.
Two sessions are in need of knowledgeable speakers with excellent presentation skills. If you are interested in participating, or can recommend a speaker, contact the session moderators no later than July 26.
Session Title: "Betwixt and between: integrating MARC data with museum object records"
Number of Speakers Needed: 4
Date / Time: Tuesday, March 25, 10:30 AM - Noon
Description: The unwieldiness of the MARC format has created obstacles in achieving integrated access to bibliographic records and materials with other record types. There is growing consensus among art institutions that online access to a museum's entire collection, including library materials, is a desirable model for disseminating information for research and educational purposes. Toward this end, some institutions have begun experimenting with integrated access to object and bibliographic records in a single search mechanism. Much of the artwork has been recorded and managed within in-house databases, such as FileMaker Pro, Access, or off-the-shelf collection management systems. The challenge has been to find a mechanism to map the MARC data to mesh with other record formats or devise a container which can hold many record types. This session specifically addresses the technical issues involved with integrating MARC records with data residing in other formats and platforms, including relational databases, XML and Dublin Core. It seeks to create a forum for museum libraries and other art institutions who have been working independently on the problem, identify hardware and software to implement model projects, and define strategies for standard implementation. Topics include MARC data conversion and mapping, interface development and design, selection of a preferred MARC field set for public display, the implications of integrated access on search and retrieval, and the future of MARC in an integrated world.

Session Title: "The Road Not Taken" Art Librarians Outside of the Art Library
Number of Speakers Sought:
Date / Time: Sunday, March 23rd, 2:00-3:30 PM
Description: This session is a "Contemporary Issues" panel discussion, focusing on the increasing number of art librarians that are applying their library education and experiences to fields outside of the traditional library environment. What is of particular interest to me is how an art library background, working with and organizing information about art, can be utilized in other fields and careers.
