Suzy:
Definitely buy this set. We at Duke actually used donor money to get it
(although it's pretty inexpensive as far as reference sets go). It's in
a handsome black binding (unfortunately paper faux buckram)with maroon
spine labels. The text layout is sober and elegant, 14-point serif
type. Illustrations are all black and white, but in separate
glossy-paper
sections. The organization is by region rather than building type.
Just as nice, it doesn't assume vast art historical knowledge. This is
the kind of reference work that I'd refer upcoming vacationers to get a
feeling for an area, architecturally. I think it would be helpful in
inspiring architecture students.
I hope this will be reviewed in Art Docs, I'd like to have a better
evaluation myself.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Monuments of Italy set
Hello everyone, I'm looking for advice from those of you who have
acquired the 6-volume set:
The Monuments of Italy: A Regional Survey of Art, Architecture
and Archaeology from Classical to Modern Times
recently published by Tauris.
Would this be appropriate for a specialized collection of books
on architecture intended to inspire architects and to be of use
to architectural historians? Are the volumes physically
attractive -- binding, color photography, etc.?
Any comments gratefully accepted.
