Reference and Instruction Librarian for Denison Library
The Libraries of The Claremont Colleges
The librarian provides reference and instruction service in an
undergraduate setting at the Denison Library on the Scripps College
campus. In addition, the successful candidate will provide reference
service for Special Collections at Honnold/Mudd Library, the
largest of the four Libraries of The Claremont Colleges.
Duties and responsibilities of the successful candidate:
--Provide general reference and specialized research guidance in the
Denison Library and in Special Collections at the
Honnold/Mudd Library, in person, by telephone, through correspondence,
and by appointment.
--Participate in the Libraries' instruction program by actively working
with faculty on specific course needs, teaching
library-sponsored classes and developing instructional materials, both
in paper and for the web. Opportunity exists for successful
candidate to participate in dynamic instruction development.
--Develop, manage and maintain the libraries' collections in specific
subject areas, including art and classics, in all formats; evaluate
and select acquisitions for the reference collection at Denison Library.
--Serve as liaison with faculty in assigned subject areas.
--Provide access to rare books, the colleges' archives and other special
collections;
interpret and promote these collections through exhibits, tours and
presentations, prepare indices and other finding aids to various
manuscript materials.
--Cultivate and sustain collaborative relationships with faculty to
further the Libraries' mission of contributing to learning, teaching and
research at The Colleges.
--Participate in hiring temporary student staff and training for special
projects.
--Participate in the Libraries' planning through service on teams and
other groups.
--Perform related duties and participate in special projects as
assigned.
Required qualifications: Graduate degree from a program accredited by
ALA or an equivalent graduate library science/information
studies degree; demonstrated customer service commitment; demonstrated
expertise with computer applications and electronic
research tools; knowledge of reference sources; excellent interpersonal
and communication skills; academic background in the
humanities; ability to work effectively as a team member in a dynamic
and rapidly changing environment; and understanding of the
role of libraries and scholarly communication in an academic
environment.
Desired qualifications: Academic background in art history; knowledge of
and experience in Special Collections; knowledge of and
interest in technology applications related to Special Collections;
previous work in a college environment; knowledge of current
preservation practices; previous reference and instruction experience or
coursework; and participation in professional organizations.
Position reports to: Denison Librarian/Assistant Director of Libraries
Hours: Full-time, exempt, twelve-month position. May include some
evening and/or weekend hours.
