Subject: Want to write for Art Bulletin?

Dear Queer Caucus comrades,
I'm writing because the Caucus has had some exciting news, and because
that news (surprise) will require a few volunteers. (My co-chair, Maura
Reilly, is out of the country.) Sorry for the impersonal group note, but
time is of the essence....
Some of you will remember the decision at last CAA to write a letter
to the Art Bulletin suggesting an article on the state of the field in GLBT
art studies. We just received a very positive response from the editor,
Perry Chapman, and she has asked me to suggest the names of individuals who
might be interested in writing some part of the proposed article. At the
moment, she envisions this as a kind of "round-table" composed of several
short essays by different scholars. Each would take on some particular area
within the field of gay art, and present the current findings, methodologies,
controversies, and institutional politics with a distinctive and intelligent
point of view.
So: I'm looking for interested parties. These pieces could actually
be fun -- much less work than a full-scale bibliographic overview, and you
could choose to write on something you know fairly well (or want to learn
more about). For instance: I'm thinking of taking on the area of "European
Gay Art 1400-1750: Late Medieval, Neoclassical, or Early Modern?" You could
consider doing a time period, a culture, or a theme. Ultimately Chapman will
choose her authors, of course, but she would like help in identifying
candidates for further discussion. She's thinking of giving people about a
year to write their pieces.
My sense is that if we can give her enough good people to choose from,
she's open to running such an article, which would of course be enormously
important: the "imprimatur" of queer studies. If you have any interest in
helping, please contact me a.s.a.p. (Chapman wants the list soon). And/or,
if you know of anyone else who might be interested, please pass this info
along. Feel free to phone me at home, 212-873-3096, if you want more details
or discussion.
Many thanks,
Jim Saslow
