Hi Academic librarian colleagues,
"It's summertime and the living is easy ..." We know one thing for
certain, Gershwin wasn't an academic librarian! Yep, now's the time to get
rolling on all those projects that you've been putting aside for the past 9
months. I want to take advantage of all this creative work and put it in
our update column.
Yes, this means another update column deadline is upon us (well, it's upon
me at this point). So, I'm writing to ask each of you to take a few
moments and email me with those summer projects that you're all getting
geared up for as I write. Yes, we'd all rather be lounging under the shady
oaks, but I suspect that we at U. of Michigan are not alone in using these
"slow" summer months to launch into new projects. I plan to use the
upcoming column to present an overview of many of the projects that we're
undertaking at our various institutions -- this plan requires that you
contribute (yes, this means YOU -- feel free to visualize a finger pointing
impolitely at you). When the column appears in late summer, it will be an
opportune time to look back at those initial hopes for the downtime of
summer.
Having trouble getting those mental juices flowing? Well, as a for
instance, one of the projects we're working on here is incorporating our
e-reserves service into the university-sponsored web-based coursetools
service. On another front, I'm working with a group on a resource/tool
that would provide internet access to maps and images of Detroit
(contemporary and historical) as well as GIS tools to manipulate and create
maps. And then there's the virtual 3-D architectural model archive to get
off the ground... I know I'm not the only one with special summer
projects, so send me those ideas. It'd be fun to get as broad a sampling
as possible -- the more the merrier. Just a couple sentences are fine -- I
welcome synopses that are sketchy, as well as those that are well-formed.
Please send me your ideas by Wed., June 5th. And, please do send them, I
don't want to write just about me and my summer plans. (If you don't want
to write, then call me -- I can take notes and write up a few sentences for
you -- 734.647.5274). Do I sound desperate enough?!!!
And I know you're all up to something this summer -- so send me those ideas!
thanks,
Rebecca
