Greetings all --
This posting made it onto vra-l and the Canadian visual resources list, but
not arlis-l.:
"TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN (Slide Curators?, Art Librarians?)
STATEMENT
Hartill Art Associates Inc. advises that it will cease operations at
the end of 2002.
We are seeking a Buyer from a non-profit institution for the archive
of analog images(35mm slides) covering 18 countries, all Periods/Styles
documenting ARCHITECTURE, SCULPTURE and related Decorative Arts.
Details of the Terms of Offer are available upon request from
serious enquiries only.
COMMENT
The issues that are mainly concerned in this decision are the rapid
advances in digitisation that appear to provide value to slide librarians in
the ease of access upon demand and which I regret not being able to provide
for many libraries; as well the the development of programmes by idealistic
sources believing that Art should be free notwithstanding that there is
still a cost in providing such material in the first place.
AND, finally, the interpretation of FAIR USE is being far too
liberally applied in many slide libraries in the US to the great detriment
of principles & ethical professionalism let alone the effect upon the image
providers - thank goodness for those who do still request permission to scan
etc.!
So, essentially, we cannot keep pace in providing answers to these
ongoing issues and that is why HAA will cease to exist on Dec.31 2002.(and
you can guess what I am going to do with all those slides remaining ;-) !)
In closing, I wish to offer my very sincere thanks to the many Slide
Curators who form a core group of loyal and interested supporters; their
needs both I and Marlene have tried to meet over the years, sometimes to
their great pleasure!, and I am very grateful that we have been recognised
for so long a time, over 25 years !!!. In the future, I plan on continuing
with Special Projects Photography delivering the images that you request to
the best of my ability. (and physical strength??? :-) )
To the "Good Guys" - thanks for everything!
Cheerio
