I received 3 responses to my query: "What do you do when you need a number
in the N510-3990 range for Art museums, galleries, etc., by region or country?"
Two responses were from museum libraries, and one was from a university
library.
All three indicated that they create their own Cutter or class number for
museums and galleries not established in the schedule by LC. The obvious
gaps in the N510-3990 and expediency were reasons cited. No one indicated
that they had ever contacted LC and asked them to establish a needed
number, although one person said she checks the latest N schedule to see
how her in-house numbers fit in with LC, and if LC has established a
different number for a museum, she will change her local number to match LC's.
Locally, we are still thinking about this issue. All three responses
brought up the main issue in my mind: consistency. In a smaller setting, it
is easier to record the in-house numbers for future use, and make sure all
cataloging staff know about the practice.
We have 3 catalogers working with art books (2 Slavic and 1 non-Slavic),
plus an entire paraprofessional unit dedicated to assigning LC call numbers
to books without copy.
I think we will probably decide to establish local numbers if we can't
possibly fit the book elsewhere, and rely on our unreliable online
shelflist to reserve the number. We are BIBCO participants and we could not
code these records as PCC, so I think we will continue to be very
conservative about creating in-house numbers.
I thank everyone for their responses!
