American Museum of the Moving Image
Director of Collection Documentation and Research
The Museum is seeking a museum or library professional interested in
employing new methods and tools for managing museum information assets. The
Director of Collection Documentation and Research will serve as a core team
member in an initiative to overhaul the management of collections
information; lead the effort to integrate new technologies into the domain
of museum cataloguing and research; develop strategies to encourage access
to information and sharing of knowledge both within and outside of the
museum; oversee digital imaging initiatives and the creation of new services
surrounding them; and assist curators and external specialists in telling
the stories about the objects that represent the record of one of the most
dynamic forces of modern times - the moving image.
Responsibilities
1. Direct all activities related to information management
(cataloguing,
research, and support documentation), and digital imaging initiatives (image
capture, cataloguing, production, and preservation).
2. In collaboration with other Museum staff, design and implement an
integrated digital information asset management strategy, on-line
collections research service, and a comprehensive digital asset archive.
3. Manage intellectual property rights for the collection, including
participation in the definition of policies and procedures for securing
rights, image use, and documentation.
4. Plan, design, and implement an on-line photo service and sales site.
5. Identify, recruit, and supervise scholars and researchers to advance
expertise about the Museum's collection.
6. Ensure that appropriate content, access, and inter-operability
standards
are employed, including national and international museum standards, and
film and media standards.
7. Implement a collection information management system that will
inter-operate with other museum information asset repositories (including
those for still and moving images, sound, and new media).
8. In conjunction with Museum's development officer, determine funding
needs
and opportunities in the areas of collections research, and access.
Knowledge/skills/experience
1. Education and Training: M.A./M.S./M.L.S or equivalent
life-experience.
Advanced degree in American Studies or Cinema/Media Studies highly
desirable.
2. Work Experience: Eight years of museum or library experience in a
collection-related discipline with at least two years of managerial
responsibilities.
3. Skills and Abilities: A thorough knowledge of analogue and digital
information asset management, standards, procedures, and research
methodologies, including current digital information, communication and
technology concepts, practices, and trends; ability to synthesize complex
technological guidelines, protocols and standards for use in networked
environments; ability to integrate technology into core museum activities,
programs and services; outstanding management and supervisory skills, and a
high level of initiative.
4. Active Membership in the Association of Moving Image Archivists a
plus.
