Where can I find information about the history of charging admission to
museums? I have always assumed that this is a relatively recent
phenomenon, and that it went against the age-long tradition of free
museums. Hence all the consternation in Britain when fees were
introduced. I have a patron, however, who claims that the practice goes
back to the Victorian era. Is there any evidence to back that up? Thanks
as always for any help you can provide.
