Director of Metadata and Cataloging
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation seeks a Director of Metadata and Cataloging
for its ArtSTOR initiative, which will make digital images of art works and
related scholarly materials available for nonprofit educational, cultural,
and scholarly purposes.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Executive Director of ArtSTOR, the Director of Metadata and
Cataloging will: develop metadata standards for a wide range of collections
(taking into account existing standards, the nature of collections in
ArtSTOR, and the needs of ArtSTOR's primary users); develop guidelines and
document best practices for the development of metadata; analyze and
evaluate metadata in collections that may be included in ArtSTOR; oversee
and coordinate the work of catalogers creating, revising, or enhancing
metadata for ArtSTOR collections and create a quality control process for
such work; collaborate with other staff in the development of the ArtSTOR
database architecture and features of the software environment; and serve as
ArtSTOR's principal liaison to metadata standard developers and cataloging
authorities in the educational, cultural, and scholarly communities.
Qualifications
The Director of Metadata and Cataloging will have: at least a Bachelor's
degree with coursework in computer science, library science, or museum
science; 3-5 years in the development or application of metadata standards
in the library or cultural community as a cataloger, archivist, or museum
professional; demonstrated knowledge of the development of metadata
standards in the library or cultural heritage communities; demonstrated
experience working with a range of software applications supporting the
development of metadata; familiarity with library bibliographic standards
and metadata standards such as Dublin Core, VRA Core, CDWA, and OAI; and
experience managing others and the ability to work as part of a team in a
quickly evolving environment to complete projects in a timely and
professional manner.
Preferred: Familiarity with Luna Imaging, Inc.'s Insight software, and an
advanced degree in library, computer, or museum sciences.
