Dear ARLIS,
I think we should begin to coalesce our ideas on the subject of some
travel funding for the Baltimore conference for a library school
student of colour. The members of the Ethnic Caucus committed to a
small amount of funding that will be contributed out of pocket for
travel to B-more. But that is only a small group of people. How
about a systematic effort? A check-off on the membership form?
I wonder if we can come to a consensus as an organization about
contributing to this nascent fund. Norine, perhaps this should be
viewed as a proposal to the Board. Could we at least waive student
membership fee and registration for a student this year?
Below, you will see the text of a message I sent to the University of
Maryland Library School students on the heels of such offers from
both SLA and ARL. I think we need to settle on our own commitment
from ARLIS before going any further with recruiting in the Library
Schools. I do have contact information for at least one more school,
but I hesitate to continue as the Caucus funding will support only
one student minimally.
See what you think,
lucie
Dear Clis,
I would like to piggyback on Josie's announcement for ARL.
ARLIS/NA - Art Librarians Society of North America (www.arlisna.org)
has committed to an effort to diversify its membership for this
coming year and the new century. I am the Co-chair of the Diversity
Committee for ARLIS/NA and am committed to recruiting library school
students of diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds into our organization.
The ARLIS/NA national conference will be in Baltimore next year
(2003) and travel money will be earmarked for sending one or more
library school students of colour to the conference. It is a
wonderful time to become an art librarian for anyone with an academic
background in the arts, media, film, digital libraries or other
allied fields. There are jobs out there and exciting projects ahead.
If you would like to talk with me about ARLIS/NA or the travel money
particularly, please contact me at [log in to unmask] I am also
available to meet with a group or individually on Tuesdays. I would
love to see these funds go to a student from the University of
Maryland College of Information Sciences.
yours,
