Dear colleagues:
As you may know, the Mellon Foundation is currently funding a variety of
initiatives to develop the Mellon International Dunhuang Archive. This
archive will contain digitized
manuscripts and digitized versions of the cave paintings from the Dunhuang
area of China. The Mellon International Dunhuang Archive will be
distributed as part of ArtSTOR, the Mellon Foundation's broader effort to
create and distribute digitized art for scholarly and educational purposes.
The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) with the support of
the Mellon Foundation, has organized a study of the scholarly and
educational use of Dunhuang materials now, before they are available in
digitized form. This study is designed to create a baseline of information
from which we could later attempt to measure the effects on scholarship and
teaching of the introduction of the digital archive. I have been asked to
help CLIR organize this study.
I write to seek your help. As part of this user study, I am attempting to
build a database containing the names of the faculty and graduate students
in the United States who currently use Dunhuang materials for their research
and pedagogical work. If you know of faculty or graduate students at your
institution who use Dunhuang materials, would you please email me their
names and institutional affiliation. These names will be used to assist us
in determining how large the population currently is of scholars involved in
research or pedagogy involving various Dunhuang materials.
