Dear Pay Anne:
You have made very good points as well as other of our colleagues. Now we
need the imagination and the commitment to recruit, lure and inform people
of color that there are opportunities in art librarianship.
Attending a national conference is very stimulating, but without financial
support is not possible. The suggestion of the Ethnic Caucus is
quite feasible. To invite a couple of library students of color from
the local library schools to attend our national conference. This way,
there is no transportation or hotel expenses.
At the international level, it is very difficult for a Mexican librarian
to attend a conference, and even more difficult for a South American
colleague. Lets say that a R/T flight from Chile is 1500 dollars.
Then the hotel, and food. The cost is around 3 thousand dollars
plus the time for the professional leave that the University
or institution will be giving up. That is far more than a month's
salary. In some places it will be a couple of months salary. Going back to
the NA. Even for the Canadian members it is costly attending a conference
this year when the Canadian dollar is below 0.70.
It would be ideal that a Mexican Travel award could be funded,
and I am sure that ARLIS/NA will find a way.
As for an ethnic sampler among ARLIS members, let me name some:
