Dear Colleagues,
It's time to reserve space for business and discussion group meetings at the
ARLIS/NA Annual Conference in Baltimore, March 20-26, 2003!
The Conference Planning Committee is working diligently to schedule an event
that offers members an excellent selection of conference sessions, time to
meet with colleagues--both formally and informally, and free time to enjoy
the city. One complaint we've all heard in the past is that there is never
enough time to do all of these things.
We can't please all the people, all the time, but we're going to try.
Before you reserve space for a business or discussion group meeting,
consider the following:
1. Does it make sense to combine a discussion group with a business meeting,
because one naturally leads to the other? If so, the Committee will be
happy to schedule that combined meeting.
2. Can you self-schedule your meeting? In Baltimore, we will have the
luxury of a more-than-adequate number of meeting rooms. For the length of
the Conference, rooms will be set aside for self-scheduling of meetings.
You will be able to do this in advance of the conference beginning January
2003, on the Conference Web site.
3. What is the purpose of the business meeting? What is your agenda? Too
often, new members find the business meetings are a bit forbidding, and too
often, the only purpose of business meetings is to come up with ideas for
conference sessions for the next year's conference. Consider re-casting the
business meeting as a discussion group and marketing it with a pre-announced
agenda of discussion topics on ARLIS-L.
4. Does your group need a business meeting at all? Can the work of the
group be better addressed via email? Consider having no business meeting.
To reserve space and a time for your business meeting or discussion group,
send your request to Joan Stahl, Conference Co-Chair ([log in to unmask]
