This is a reminder that the Collection Development Discussion Group will
meet Friday evening, March 22, from 5:30 to 7:00. (The meeting is listed
in the preliminary program with the Collection Development Committee,
starting at 5:00; we do plan to end the committee meeting by 5:30 in order
to leave as much time as possible for discussion.)
The topic for the first part of the session will be vendor
databases--especially those of foreign vendors. How are we using them? Do
they help signal what books are coming on the approval plan? Or are they
used mainly for ordering, or for current awareness? What do we think of
their performance, usefulness, and dependability? For those of us who are
not yet using these databases, what are the barriers to their use?
If anyone would like to prepare from one to three minutes worth of informal
comments to help get us started, please contact me directly at
[log in to unmask] We also hope to have one or more vendors present
to answer questions.
Thanks to Bill Keller for suggesting this topic.
We will try to leave the second part of the session for free-form
discussion of whatever topics participants choose to bring up.
I look forward to seeing many of you in two weeks.
Tim Shipe
Convener, Collection Development Discussion Group
