Jennifer & all:
Duke University Libraries was, I think, one of the first to subscribe to the
AP Photoarchive. I'm told by the rep that we're one of its largest academic
users.
Not to turn this into a commercial, but I personally love the Archive. It
answers tons of current-event questions, has historic photos online (Lee
Miller, Titanic), is updated every day. Art students love the feature where
you can select images by dominant color. The single best quality about the
photo archive is its absolute ease of use. There are three basic fields to
search: WHAT, WHEN, WHERE. Once you show the AP Photoarchive to a patron,
you never go back to them again. They find what they want consistently. My
personal suspicion is that it is used more by public policy/political
science folks than art types. Also, the use rights are extremely fair:
images can be printed or used in any paper or class project (just no
T-shirts or websites). I think it's a tremendous value without rival.
