Dear Collective Wisdom,
A really vague reference question come my way yesterday. Before
pouring through volumes in the stacks or image databases, I thought I
would refer this to the group: Someone wants to know the "source" (in
this case I think they mean original or originator) of the "well
known" medieval woodcut of a street magician, in a village square
before a crowd, doing the 3 cups magic trick. The patron thinks it is
an Italian street scene, although it could be northern European or
French. As this came to me 2nd hand and a number of other complicated
reasons -- I can't get back to the patron. I confess, I probed Google
some and saw a reference to "that really famous woodcut of a street
magician" -- but no link to an image. Am I the only art appreciator
who does not know this image? If you have any suggestions, please
e-mail me off-list. I can post a reply to the list once the visual
riddle is solved.
