2002 ARLIS/VRA Joint Conference
Common Ground Mini-Institute
Has your library suddenly discovered images and now wants to make them accessible on the web? Is your museum considering joining an online consortium but has never created records for public consumption? Is it time to put those slide records into a database that does more than print labels? Where should you begin?
Begin by joining us at the ARLIS/VRA Conference in St. Louis and attending
the Common Ground mini-institute on standards for image cataloging--a workshop, a session, and a seminar--that may help you with these and other
questions from the philosophical to the practical. The institute begins with a workshop on Friday that will demonstrate an image database application that uses many of the descriptive standards and tools that will be covered in the session on Friday evening and the seminar on Monday.
Sample topics from the mini-institute:
· Applying the VRA Core categories to a database structure
· Discovering how cataloging standards can help users
· Using online authorities
· Adapting bibliographic tools and resources to image cataloging
· Exploring the next generation of database systems
· Describing the untitled object
· Linking parts of complex works
· Providing subject access
· Documenting built works
· Cataloging for the museum community
Please join us for:
Workshop 8: Common Ground: Implementing the VRA CORE Data in an Image
Collection Management System on Friday 1-5 PM.
Session II: Common Ground: Standards for Cataloging Images and Objects on
Friday 7-9 PM.
Seminar VI: Common Ground: Standards for Cataloging Images and Objects on
