ART DOCUMENTATION CALL FOR PAPERS, Fall 2002 issue
The Spring 2002 issue of Art Documentation will reach Arlis/NA members
shortly after the St.Louis conference, but it is already time to think of
papers for the Fall 2002 issue. In the past few months, at least two hot
topics have emerged on arlis-l:
1. The value placed upon the services of art & architecture librarians. The
editors of Art Documentation would like to see Arlis members address this
topic from several perspectives: the serious/philosophical, about the value
of art information professionals in our 'information age;' the pragmatic,
about how to improve our lot, or the perception/reality of our worth to
institutions; and something lighter, about 'image:' in popular culture,
movies, advertising, literature? We already have commitments for viewpoints
on some aspects of the issue from Australia and Canada. We would also like
to see the issue explored from the perspective of our US members, whose
numbers and varied experience can undoubtedly provide substantial input on
an issue of such crucial importance to our profession.
2. Bibliographic instruction, or, how to persuade students and professors to
recognize that our contribution to their endeavours is essential (is this
another take on issue number one above?). We have seen much valuable
discussion about this topic as well: how to structure the content; how to
integrate it as part of scheduled courses; how to present it; and how to
market it.
In both cases, the substantive articles that could be cited by our members
and other art information professionals should be published in Art
Documentation. If we don't present the definitive arguments of our case, who
else will do it for us? We encourage Arlis/NA members and arlis-l
subscribers to contribute their expertise and opinion about these issues,
and others, so that we all can benefit from them.
The Art Documentation Contributor Guidelines will be posted on the Arlis/NA
home page shortly (watch for arlis-l announcement). The deadline for
submission of first drafts is about May 15. We look forward to hearing from
many of you.
