Hey! I have just finished reading the postings on library instruction [put
aside temporarily]. What a series of good ideas and suggestions!
I have a couple of additional suggestions that have worked for me in the
past.
1. studio consultant: some years ago the health sciences librarians
wrote about following doctors on rounds and contributing their information
finding expertise through that process. Last semester I attended the first
month or so of the School of Architecture's graduate research studio. The
semester-long project was focused on the strip. By attending the class
sessions I was able to suggest sources on the spot, or come back to the
next session armed with ideas. And of course being with the students made
them feel easier asking for help [I think!]. As an added bonus, I have
been able to put products of the studio on the Architecture Studies
Library web page [http://www.library.unlv.edu/arch/exhibits/map/], which
adds to our info on Vegas.
2. thesis help: this is an area that either the students figure out on
their own that it makes sense to talk to me, or the faculty guide them to
it.
3. syllabi: I solicit syllabi for studios to get an idea of what the
projects are to be, and send suggestions for relevant library materials to
the faculty. This has worked especially well for projects that are sited
in Las Vegas, as many of them are, since the library has maps and aerials
and other Vegas sources that faculty know we are continually expanding.
4. accreditation wedge: as I meet with accreditation teams from interior
design, landscape, and architecture I talk instruction and library use,
which has often made its way into the accrediation reports as a positive
feature of the program, setting up a kind of self-fulfilling loop.

In a related vein, I'd like to mention that the ARLIS Occasional Papers
series will be publishing a new title -- hopefully available at the
conference -- titled "Library Instruction for Students in Design
Disciplines: Scenarios, Exercises, and Techniques." Some of the voices
that have contributed to this thread are included in the Occasional Paper
[Edith Crowe and Barbara Prior]. Other contributors include Wayne Meyer,
Jane Carlin, Jack Robertson, Susan Jurist, Sarah Nolan, Ed Teague, Ruth
Thomas, Elizabeth Byrne, Jim Robertson, BJ Irvine, Ann Lally, Kay
Logan-Peters, John Broadbent and Joy Slator. I am the editor, and a
contributor as well.
