Hello all.
We are about to install compact shelving for the art collection at Colby
College. This will be mechanical-assist, case-style (our existing shelving)
compact shelving from Space Saver.
I'm working out the final details and have a query. As we all know, the
oversized nature of art books can pose some challenges in the compact
shelving scenario. We do have a "folio" section for those items which need
to lie flat, but many of our books on the conventional shelves overhang the
edges, and this can be a problem when the shelving compacts. The existing
case style shelving is two sections of 12" deep shelving back to back with
a metal panel in the middle.
What are the strategies you would use to remedy this. My thought was to use
a good-sized
"bumper" (more than the standard 2 in" bumper normally used by
Space-Saver), but apparently if the bumper size increased this would
decrease the aisle space. Spacesaver now recommends that when the shelving
is installed on the mobile carriages, "we can leave out the metal back
panel which will allow the very large books to "flow" in to the other
section of shelving if the book on the opposite side is less than 12"
deep. If you had a 14" book on one side and a ten inch book in the
opposite side, then both books would fit on the shelves with no
overhang. This probably won't work every time but the smaller books
vastly out number the larger books so the odds are pretty good that it
will work most of the time. It will also save aisle space and eliminate
the need for oversized bumpers."
Is this a good solution? Will this pose a problem with smaller catalogs
and and other small paperback items getting lost or pushed back or crushed
behind other large heavy books.
Any experiences from the field???
