Hi,
You were all so helpful when I asked for input concerning online
picture sources. This time I am asking for your help with circulating
slides, especially from those of you working in public libraries, but
in university and museum libraries, also.
We are faced with the fact, as many of you are, of having too small a
staff to handle the hand charging of slides, pulling, placing in
circulation boxes, etc. Right now our slides are given accession
numbers and shelved in cabinets. They are well cataloged in a card file
with the sets also listed on our homepage. After the customer places an
order, a staff member pulls the slides and places them in a box to
circulate them with the due date, etc.
We are hoping to have the cataloging for our slide sets added to our
online catalog and have the slides shelved in such a way that the
customer can help themselves. This would make them accessible to other
local libraries as well.
Questions I have right now are the following.
Do any of you shelve your slides in binders or boxes out where the
public can serve themselves?
Do you give the sets a classification number or code and how do you
arrange them on the shelf?
Has online access increased your circulation a great deal?
We have been unable to find small (50 slides)slide boxes for
circulation. We have been able to replace the ones for 150 slides.
Does anyone have a good source for these?
I've done a google search and found a number of slide collections with
online access, but none of them have been public libraries. Would
anyone from a public library that has their slide collection included
in the online catalog let me know who they are so we can look at their
records? That would be a great help.
Thanks in advance for your help. If we don't find a good solution, we
may have to give up this worthwhile service.
